The Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS) offers a full range of support and opportunities for your digital and data-intensive research and learning needs, including workshops, talks, and consultation hours, which are free and open to all unless otherwise noted.

Soak in the summer vibes while you still can! Students will back on campus later this month and we're gearing up to help you with all things data this fall.

Consultation Hours

Join us for this fall's first consultation hours! Get out of the heat and drop into Norlin, E206 from noon-1pm on Tuesday, August 25th to grab a cold drink, meet our librarians and learn how they can help you with your research. No registration required!

We host free consultation hours every week at noon on Tuesdays during the fall and spring semesters to help you with your data-intensive research needs. Bring your questions and speak to our experts on methods and tools for research data management, digital humanities and qualitative data, geospatial data, or any aspect of the data life cycle. Consultations are open to all – from undergrad to faculty and beyond.

CRDDS Research Data Foundations Camp

Tuesday, August 18th: 9am-5pm
Wednesday, August 19th: 9am-5pm

Join the Center for Research Data & Digital Scholarship on Tuesday, August 18th and Wednesday, August 19th for our Research Data Foundations Camp designed specifically with graduate students in mind (although all are welcome)! This is an in-person event. Space is limited.

As data-based research becomes a common practice, skills in data management, data analysis, and computational thinking are increasingly important for applied researchers. The Camp will provide a gentle introduction to data and programming-related research tools that will increase users' access to cutting-edge methods as they pursue their programs and research. Topics covered include reproducible research and data management; tools for collaboration and sharing (using GitHub and GitHub Pages); data analysis and visualization fundamentals in Python and R; and an overview of interdisciplinary data practices and ethics. No previous experience in coding or programming is required! Those who complete the optional assignments will be eligible to receive CU �ֲ��ý’s Research Data Foundations micro-credential.

HPC Micro-credential from CURC

Monday, August 10, 9am to 12:30pm
Tuesday, August 11, 9am to 12:30pm
Wednesday, August 12, 9am to 12:30pm

This micro-credentialed course is for those who will be tackling computing-, memory-, or storage-intensive research problems that exceed the capacity of a laptop or desktop computer. It consists of a three day workshop and is intended to give attendees a hands-on introduction to high-performance computing (“supercomputing”) using CU �ֲ��ý’s Research Computing resources.

Upon successfully completing the associated assignments, learners are issued a digital badge, allowing achievements to be displayed and shared. Just as diplomas serve to recognize degrees, digital badges are artifacts that offer recognition and storytelling about micro-credentials.

Important: This course is open to members of the Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium (RMACC). Participants from CU �ֲ��ý are required to attend in person each day; RMACC members may attend in person or virtually. A Zoom link will be emailed upon registration.

Alpine New User Seminar (A Primer) from CURC

New to CU Research Computing (CURC), but don't know where to start? This Primer* training is designed to give you an overview of CURC’s resources, procedures, and best practices. During this session, you will learn about High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, the resources available on CURC’s HPC system Alpine, data storage options, and how to access CURC resources. By the end of the session, you will have a solid foundation for exploring and learning to use Alpine through CURC’s additional training and documentation.

* What is a Primer? A Primer is a session that provides an introduction to concepts, systems, and tools. You can expect to leave a Primer with an introductory-level understanding of the topic.

CU Research Computing: Ask Us Anything!

CU Research Computing is excited to announce an expansion of our consultation hours for the Fall 2026 semester! On the first Friday of each month, we will host “CU Research Computing: Ask Us Anything!”, a 3-hour virtual drop-in office hours session.

CRDDS is developing our 3-year strategic plan and invite members of the CU �ֲ��ý community to complete this brief survey. We're currently looking at who uses our services, which ones to prioritize, and opportunities for the future. Your answers will help us understand how we are or are not supporting the CU �ֲ��ý community and where to best focus our efforts. Turn Your Notes Into a Second Brain

Wednesday, April 8, 1-2pm

You probably use tools like calendars, contacts, to do lists, search engines, chat bots, free notes, or citation managers. But how often have you thought about metadata management, daily notes, personal wikis, databases, inquiry logs, search query logs, or knowledge management practices in general? We will explore your knowledge management options, introduce a framework for building your practices, and learn about a dedicated platform--Obsidian--that unifies your approach. By the end of this workshop, we will identify your personal goals, design a management strategy for your needs, and plan the easiest way to get started with your new knowledge management habit.

Save the date, enjoy lunch, and join the conversation about designing a new Public Impact Research (PIR) initiative at CU �ֲ��ý. The session includes engaging collaboratively to define and scope PIR, build awareness, provide examples, and share PIR techniques and methods. The session will serve as a creative space to envision, plan, and co-design what the future of PIR could look like at CU �ֲ��ý. CU �ֲ��ý faculty and staff are invited to participate.

Call for Faculty Participation: Supporting AI Training through Hands-on Modules

To equip researchers-in-training with the skills to leverage advanced computing resources and AI methodologies in their research, CURC User Support is seeking faculty interested in co-developing a hands-on, self-contained, applied AI module for their course curricula. We are especially interested in collaborating with faculty who teach topics where AI applications are rapidly expanding but do not yet offer formal AI instruction.

The resources CURC can provide include (but are not limited to):

Compute hardware (Alpine Cluster) and shared data storage
Pre-built software applications and programming environments (e.g. Anaconda, containers, software applications, Jupyter Notebook)
Technical guides, in-class demonstrations, and course support

We are targeting 2-3 courses for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters. Interested faculty should email rc-help@colorado.edu for more information.

The Sixth Chameleon User Meeting

April 15–16, 2026 at NCAR's Mesa Lab in �ֲ��ý, CO

Chameleon is an NSF-funded national research cloud providing free GPU, CPU, storage, and edge computing access to over 13,000 researchers and students across US universities. The meeting is designed as a working session focused on characterizing AI infrastructure needs and challenges across CS research and education — with the goal of producing a community report that shapes the platform's future direction.

The program includes a keynote from Valerie Taylor (Argonne National Laboratory) on LLM-based frameworks for energy-efficient scientific computing, research and education panels, mini-symposia on AI for education and reproducibility, and hands-on tutorials covering bare-metal computing, virtualization, edge computing, and reproducible research workflows with Trovi.

CU �ֲ��ý researchers and students are especially encouraged to attend — the meeting is right in your backyard, and your perspective on local research computing needs is exactly what we're looking for. Non-users of Chameleon are explicitly welcome.
