I don't know of any better time,” he said.&nbsp;</span></p><h2><span>New frontiers for AI</span></h2><p dir="ltr"><span>Sankaranarayanan compared today’s large language model AI systems to an aircraft. It’s also leading to an enormous amount of “technical debt” that will have to be dealt with, he said. As billions and billions of lines of code are written with AI, at some point, decisions will have to be made about how to maintain that code.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“The industry is going to figure out the optimal ratio of people to AI,” Sankaranarayanan said. “I feel like the companies who are going all in on AI have gotten it wrong. I think they will need more people, especially people who are really good at troubleshooting, who are good at engineering for performance, engineering for reliability and engineering for security.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Making software safe, secure and reliable is his research area, and he can attest to the difficulty of that particular challenge. There are also fundamental computing problems — like&nbsp;</span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_salesman_problem" rel="nofollow"><span>the traveling salesperson problem</span></a><span> — that we don’t know how to solve efficiently.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“The things we know are fundamentally hard will remain so, even with AI.”</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default 2"> <div class="ucb-article-row-subrow row"> <div class="ucb-article-content-media ucb-article-content-media-left col-lg"> <div> <blockquote class="ucb-article-blockquote"> <div class="ucb-article-blockquote-icon font-gold"> <i class="fa-solid fa-quote-left"></i> </div> <div class="ucb-article-blockquote-text"> <div>[The industry] will need more people, especially people who are really good at troubleshooting, who are good at engineering for performance, engineering for reliability and engineering for security.</div> </div></blockquote> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-text col-lg d-flex align-items-center" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><h2><span>Campuswide capacity</span></h2><p dir="ltr"><span>When it comes to new fields like quantum computing, Sankaranarayanan said the problems waiting to be solved get even more interesting.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“The kind of computing systems that I encountered as an undergraduate student more or less are the same kind of computing systems we work with today,” he said. “It's just that they have gotten faster. They've been miniaturized. But fundamentally they have the same working principles.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Quantum computing will require entirely new computing systems before its advantages can be realized, he said. Extend that to new secure, reliable software that will have to be developed for those systems, and you’ll be busy for the next 25 years.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“All of these are changing rapidly, and computer science is on the receiving end of an enormous amount of investment from the industry and the federal government in terms of AI research and research into quantum computing,” Sankaranarayanan said.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p dir="ltr"><span>CU ֲý’s history in quantum science and engineering make it the perfect place to tackle quantum computing, he added. He hopes </span><a href="/cs" rel="nofollow"><span>his department</span></a><span> can continue to build connections with other departments working on quantum challenges, like physics and electrical and computer engineering.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The already-interdisciplinary nature of the department also makes it a great partner for researchers across campus as they grapple with the effects of AI on their disciplines.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“That's one thing I'm super keen on developing and enriching — having an interdisciplinary, outward-focused computer science department that is available to everyone who's looking to navigate the big disruptions,” Sankaranarayanan said. “As AI spreads across all the sciences and engineering and humanities, we want to be there for the campus as a set of experts who can talk to pretty much anyone on campus.”</span></p><h2><span>Systems of support</span></h2><p dir="ltr"><span>The silver lining of a tough year for the computer science field? The department now has some breathing room to look at ways to better support students who are choosing it, from curriculum changes to new degree options.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“When we were having huge enrollments three years ago, there was really no way we could make structural changes of the sort that we are talking about now,” he said. “We are even more motivated to support our students.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Sankaranarayanan said the faculty are also discussing how the department’s alumni network can be better activated to support recent graduates in their career searches.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Overall, Sankaranarayanan is excited about the next incoming class and the passion they are bringing to their education.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“I don't have to tell them why they need to learn computer science,” he said. “They are coming in a time when graduates are struggling to find jobs, and yet they're choosing our field. His Office of Digital Education places “a lot of focus” on how his colleagues incorporate AI into curricula.</p><p>“If the future requires students to be good at using AI and also good engineers,” he said, “then we train students to be strong in both.”</p><p>Across the college, PhD students use AI to build interactive diagrams from static textbooks, researchers study its biases and costs, and students are enrolling in a new professional master’s program focused on AI. Faculty have created space to help one another learn about AI, while others encourage students to use it to refine papers and iterate ideas.</p> <div class="align-center image_style-original_image_size"> <div class="imageMediaStyle original_image_size"> <img loading="lazy" src="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/original_image_size/public/2026-05/ai_illustration_v4.jpg?itok=e_3dF4V1" width="4096" height="2893" alt="AI Illustration"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="text-align-right small-text">Illustration by Hanna Nordwall</p> </span> </div> <h2>The why of AI in the classroom</h2><p>Diane Sieber, an associate professor in the Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics and Society, runs the Generative Futures Lab, an informal space where faculty, staff and students can explore AI. She developed a framework to help instructors decide what level of AI use is appropriate for different assignments.</p><p>“We even made icons for syllabi, ranging from ‘full AI use encouraged’ to ‘AI use restricted,’ with explanations for each,” Sieber said.</p><p>Alvaro Velasquez, assistant professor of computer science, has already seen the benefits of AI in graduate-student writing. “They write the paper, and by iterating with AI, they refine it to a point where it’s actually very, very well written,” he said.</p><p>For students with AI anxiety, Sankaranarayanan asks they “treat this as a challenge.”</p><p>“Try to gain expertise beyond what AI can replace,” he says. “Think broadly about opportunities and the skills you need to thrive, so you don’t feel victimized by a changing technological landscape.”</p> <div class="align-center image_style-wide_image_style"> <div class="imageMediaStyle wide_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/engineering/sites/default/files/styles/wide_image_style/public/2026-05/Computer_Science_Daniel_Acuna_lab_20251118_JMP_070.jpg?h=c585571b&amp;itok=zlqWdr6D" width="1500" height="563" alt="Daniel Acuna lab"> </div> </div> <h2>Making STEM accessible through AI</h2><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p class="text-align-center lead"><strong>“I have a very bullish idea of what AI can do and how it can help us. I understand why people are cautious, but universities are supposed to look at the long arc of history.”</strong></p><p class="text-align-right lead"><strong>— Daniel Acuña</strong></p></div></div><p>Many faculty see AI as a tool for broadening access to STEM education. Velasquez believes AI could eventually help close gender and socioeconomic gaps by functioning as a personalized tutor.</p><p>To that end, ATLAS Institute Assistant Professor Ryo Suzuki is developing tools such as Augmented Physics, which uses AI alongside augmented and virtual reality to turn static textbook diagrams into interactive simulations.</p><p>“Now, imagine if AI could not only respond in text but also generate animated explanations in real time, going beyond text to make learning engaging, visual and playful,” Suzuki said.</p><p>Thomas Breideband, associate director of the NSF National AI Institute for Student- AI Teaming, works with an interdisciplinary community of researchers to study how AI can support collaboration in learning environments — particularly in middle and high school, where STEM participation gaps often emerge.</p><p>“Collaboration is a critical 21st-century skill, but it is very rarely explicitly practiced,” Breideband said. He and his colleagues are currently working with schools to integrate AI-enhanced curriculum units in classrooms.</p><h2>AI in the lab</h2><p>Researchers also interrogate AI. In Associate Professor Daniel Acuña’s lab, his team uses AI techniques to study how large language models absorb “prestige bias” from language used to describe scientific research.</p><p>“Instead of saying, ‘scientists found X,’ journalists say, ‘Harvard scientists found X,’” Acuña said. Because LLMs learn from that same data, Acuña hopes his work can help highlight — and eventually correct — those patterns.</p><p>Velasquez is tackling another challenge: AI’s immense computational cost. His research on neurosymbolic AI seeks to end “gatekeeping” and "monopolization" in AI.</p><p>“When it comes to natural language generation, it comes at a tremendous cost,” Velasquez said. “The neurosymbolic AI community has seen cases where we can use 100,000 to a million times less data.”</p><h2>New AI degree program</h2><p>The newly launched Professional Master’s in Artificial Intelligence merges technical skills with ethical considerations.</p><p>“If one of our graduates is hired by a company like Walmart, they should be able to analyze consumer data to decide what products to buy and how to manage inventory,” Sankaranarayanan said. “But they should also be able to say, ‘This approach preserves privacy, complies with regulations and is ethically sound.’”</p><p>The online degree option through Coursera is up and running, while the on-campus version begins in fall 2026.</p><p>Educators agree that they must be intentional in their approach to teaching AI.</p><p>“Technology has a very mixed record,” said Sankaranarayanan. “People fear losing jobs, and that is a valid fear, but it doesn’t have to go that way. He has since spent the last 35 years in commercial software&nbsp;building and selling companies to the likes of Hewlett Packard, Oracle and Twitter.&nbsp;As an engineer he also helped&nbsp;start DigitalGlobe&nbsp;which went IPO in 2009.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Gregory served as the ֲý Site Lead for both Twitter and Splunk, where he built out large engineering presences&nbsp;locally.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>In addition to working in Industry, Gregory has taught for over 13 years in ATLAS/Computer Science - teaching a Big Data Architecture class each spring, as well as serving on the CU Computer Science Advisory Board. He has also mentored for the TechStars&nbsp;accelerator for over 10 years, helping young companies get their start.</span><br><br><span>Gregory lives above ֲý in Four Mile Canyon with his wife Anne, their daughter Adeline and son Elan. Over the years, he’s discovered that the best software doesn’t just work well — it scales, evolves and empowers others to build on top of it.</span></p><blockquote><p dir="ltr"><span>“Treat every internship like an opportunity to learn how the industry really works, both technically and collaboratively.”&nbsp;Fernando shared. “Focus on writing clear design documents and asking thoughtful questions early, even before you start coding.”&nbsp;– Picoral</span></p></blockquote><p dir="ltr"><span>At Google, Picoral found himself doing far more than debugging or implementing features. In addition, Picoral has pushed himself by taking ownership of big projects, as he believes that this is where the best learning occurs — by stepping outside of your comfort zone.&nbsp;</span></p><blockquote><p dir="ltr"><span>“Seek feedback, iterate often, and remember that great engineers combine technical depth with strong communication and teamwork.” – Picoral&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p></blockquote><p dir="ltr"><span>Having that mindset paid off. He had dreamed of working there since high school — he was drawn to technology and, he admits, inspired by the movie&nbsp;The Internship.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>During his first year at CU ֲý, he applied early to a handful of big tech companies, determined to make that dream a reality.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“For my first Google internship in 2023, I applied as soon as applications opened,”&nbsp;Picoral said. “I interviewed in January and received my offer at the end of the month.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>That first role came through the&nbsp;Student Training in Engineering Program (STEP), a Google initiative designed for first- and second-year students.
