The Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics (CLAS) at CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ emphasizes knowledge and awareness of the literature, culture and thought of the ancient Mediterranean world, the social, cultural, religious and political history of ancient Greece and Rome, and the art and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean world, including Egypt and the Near East. ÌýIn addition, students completing the degree in classics are expected to acquire the ability and skills to read, understand and interpret written documents and works of literature in translation and/or in the original Greek and Latin, to communicate in spoken and written form clearly and effectively, and to read and think critically.

Classics majors are challenged to acquire a set of skills in the analysis and presentation of diverse forms of evidence, that stand to serve them in their daily, civic and professional lives. Ìý The field of Classics is multicultural: it involves the study of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, but also of the many peoples with whom the Greeks and Romans interacted in central and eastern Europe, north Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East. ÌýThe field of Classics is interdisciplinary because it crosses the boundaries of literature, philosophy, material and visual culture, history, and religion to study the world of antiquity. ÌýClassics majors leave CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ with marketable skills that enable them to read critically, think analytically and communicate articulately.

Admission Requirements

To graduate in a 4-year time frame, it is important that students follow the recommended schedule. Students who wish to continue their education at the community college beyond the number of credits specified below should explore with both community college and CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ staff how their graduation timeline, COF stipend, and financial aid will be affected.Ìý

Suggested Four-Year Course Plan for the Classics (CLAS) major - Classical Studies track

This is a suggested guide of coursework only and is subject to change. Always consult your academic advisor for graduation planning purposes. Depending on a student’s situation, a different plan might be more applicable. Ìý

No community college courses transfer to CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ as Classics (CLAS) courses. However, this track of the major can be completed in two years after a student has earned a general AA degree. TheÌýcourse map below recommends community college courses that include units on Ancient Greece and Rome even though that is not theÌýsole focus of these courses.

Student wishing to pursue the Classics (CLAS) major - Greek and/or Latin Language and Literature Track track would need to transfer to CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ after completing the first year of this guide and before earning an AA degree.
