What is Linguistics?

The faculty of language is unique to humans and the study of language is the study of our shared human heritage. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language, its structure and its diversity, how children learn it and how adults produce and understand it, how social practices shape and are shaped by it.

The Department of Linguistics at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ is a major center of interdisciplinary research in cognitive-functional linguistics, computational linguistics, language documentation, psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics, and sociocultural linguistics. It offers a range of research programs targeting properties of language across spoken, digital, and embodied modalities. The Department's orientation is empirical: its approach to the structure and use of language confronts theory with first-hand observations. Analysis of video and audio data, acoustic measurements of speech, computational modeling and statistical analysis, psycholinguistic experimentation, and ethnographic fieldwork in local communities and abroad all contribute to this enterprise.

Department of Linguistics Welcomes the ASL Program

The Department of Linguistics is excited to welcome the American Sign Language (ASL) Program. The addition of a new ASL minor and faculty expertise in signed languages and Deaf culture enriches the Department's commitment to understanding and celebrating the diversity of human language and communication. We look forward to the new perspectives and opportunities for learning, research,Ìýteaching, and collaboration that the ASL Program will bring to our students, faculty, and linguistics community. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Land Acknowledgment

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, Colorado’s flagship university, honors and recognizes the many contributions of Indigenous peoples in our state. CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ acknowledges that it is located on the traditional territories and ancestral homelands of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Ute and many other Native American nations. Their forced removal from these territories has caused devastating and lasting impacts. While the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ can never undo or rectify the devastation wrought on Indigenous peoples, we commit to improving and enhancing engagement with Indigenous peoples and issues locally and globally.

We will do this by:

  • Recognizing and amplifying the voices of Indigenous CU ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ students, staff and faculty and their work.
  • Educating, conducting research, supporting student success and integrating Indigenous knowledge.
  • Consulting, engaging and working collaboratively with tribal nations to enhance our ability to provide access and culturally sensitive support and to recruit, retain and graduate Native American students in a climate that is inclusive and respectful.
